Katja Heinemann / Aurora Photos, The Graying of AIDS - Portrait of Dee, 57, socializing on the smoking porch at Broadway House, a New Jersey supportive housing residence for adults suffering from HIV-related illnesses. As people with AIDS are surviving longer, there is less of a need for hospice care. Instead, Broadway House was developed in the early nineties to accommodate patients such as Dee who are not ill enough to take up hospital beds, but are too sick to be released back into the community. Placement in regular nursing homes proves difficult, as many institutions are weary to accept people with AIDS or a history of mental health or addiction problems. Dee has been at Broadway House for a year. She suffers from mild dementia, so living independently wont be an option for her. Support staff is trying to secure a placement in a transitional living facility for her, but is facing long waiting lists. Newark, New Jersey, March 2006. (Photo by Katja Heinemann/Aurora) |
Ed Kashi, Sheree Procunier, 48, is examined by Pat Burks. Sheree suffers from many serious chronic ailments, including congestive heart failure, a brain tumor, arythmia and heart disease. She was taking 22 different medications, but TennCare has limited her only 5 which has created a series of health crises. Her boyfriend, Dickie Smith, 51, has emphysema, heart disease and a bad liver. He was on 17 medications and has been completely dropped by TennCare. They have come to the North Terrace Medical Clinic for free medications and checkups by nurse Pat Burks. The North Terrace Medical Clinic is in rural Tennessee and serves mainly indigent, uninsured people. It was opened in 1993 by nurse practictioner Pat Burks. Many of the patients at the clinic are those who have been dropped by TennCare. TennCare is Tennessees expanded Medicaid program which has recently suffered dramatic cuts. Over 190,000 people are without coverage. The TennCare cuts are resulting in deaths and extreme suffering and it has become a major strain on emergency rooms and community clinics. |
